CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – It’s officially 2025 and and people are getting started on their New Year’s resolutions.

FOX23 reached out to the community to learn about ways people are setting attainable resolutions for themselves.

“Everybody’s been reflecting on the past year, what losses they’ve had or what changes they’ve had, how the economy is,” Heather Harrison said. “We have a new president coming in. I think everyone’s got some sort of anxiety.”

Harrison said setting a New Year’s resolution is one way to reduce anxiety — by focusing on things she can control.

“If I can set a goal, a new year’s resolution of something that affects me, then I can help take my focus off of any of those other stressors,” she said.

According to the American Psychological Association, 39% of New Year’s resolutions revolve around physical fitness.

Personal trainer and owner of Fit Bridge Training Monica Lillibridge said she’s seen people set really high goals for themselves and then be unable to stick to their plan.

“Too much, too soon tends to create an imbalance, and then we give up,” she said.

When it comes to setting a New Year’s resolution she recommends starting small and to not be afraid to share that goal with others.

“Everyone should want some sort of change in order to keep evolving” Lillibridge said. “I think a lot of people are scared to put it out there into the universe.”

She said sharing your goals with others can increase accountability.
