Severe storms prompt shelter use in Perryville, Missouri
PERRYVILLE, Mo. (KBSI) — Strong thunderstorms are sweeping through the FOX23 area, and local residents are seeking safety at emergency shelters.
Two weeks ago, Perry County did not have a storm shelter. Today, residents are finding refuge at the Perryville Global Methodist Church where they feel safe.
The Perryville Global Methodist Church has become a vital resource for families during severe weather. As thunderstorms roll through southeast Missouri, families gather inside with their pets safely crated, riding out the storm together.
Residents are expressing a sense of relief, knowing they now have access to a shelter.
Joshua Kurtz, a lifelong Perryville resident, shared his gratitude for the new shelter. “I’m very happy,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for Perryville, especially for people like us living in mobile homes with limited shelter options.”
Kurtz, who has a family, was previously concerned about his children’s safety in a mobile home. Now, he feels more at ease. “Before, we didn’t know where to go during a storm,” he explained. “There was no place to take shelter. Now, we have a safe spot.”
Mark Myer, a professor at the University of Memphis, had an unexpected experience during today’s storm that could have saved his life. Myer, who lives in Saint Louis, was driving back home after teaching in Memphis when he was caught in the severe weather. His wife, monitoring the weather, called him and directed him to the Perryville shelter.
“I’ve never stopped in Perryville for a storm shelter before,” Myer said. “I’ve gotten food here, but this is something I will always remember.”
