Severe weather causes damage at Shawnee Community College
ULLIN, Ill., (KBSI) – A severe storm system swept through the area over the weekend, causing damage to the Shawnee Community College baseball field.
According to executive director of public information Kevin Hunsperger, the newly installed scoreboard — put in place less than a week ago — was among the casualties.
“They were able to get it up on Thursday. They’d turned it on for the game on Friday,” he said, “and then by Sunday night, it was damaged in the storm.”
Hunsperger said they are working to get it repaired and ready to go for the rest of the season.
High winds tore off the roof of the visitors’ dugout and damaged the surrounding fence.
The overall damage could interrupt their season.
“They were set to have a game here later this week,” Hunsperger said. “Right now that’s looking like it’s going to be delayed but we’ll know officially what the schedule is going to look like for the rest of the season once crews get out here and get everything assessed.”
No injuries were reported, and officials have not yet released a damage estimate.
