Shawnee Community College earns reaffirmation of accreditation from Higher Learning Commission

ULLIN, Ill., (KBSI) – Shawnee Community College has announced its reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a significant achievement underscoring the college’s confidence, strength, and dedication.

For the first time in its history, Shawnee Community College has been placed on the Open Pathway, reflecting institutional trust, stability, and a focus on continuous quality improvement. This milestone was achieved with no findings, no follow-up reports, and no additional visits, demonstrating the college’s exceptional work.

The 10-year reaffirmation process involved a comprehensive evaluation of the institution’s mission, governance, academic programs, student support services, and financial and operational integrity. Shawnee Community College received strong marks in all areas, with HLC reviewers highlighting its inclusive practices, commitment to lifelong learning, and student-centered culture.

According to Dr. Tim Taylor, President of Shawnee Community College, “This reaffirmation confirms what we already know at Shawnee—our people are exceptional. Our faculty and staff are deeply committed to student success, and this milestone validates their professionalism, passion, and pride.”

Dr. Kristin Shelby, Accreditation Liaison Officer and Dean of Transfer and Adult Education, noted that moving to the Open Pathway demonstrates Shawnee Community College’s commitment to excellence, exceeding the Higher Learning Commission’s guiding values.

The college’s Board Chairperson, Steve Heisner, expressed gratitude to the HLC Team, students, employees, board members, and community partners for their contributions to this achievement. He views this honor as a steppingstone to further successes as the college builds a plan for the future.

Shawnee Community College will announce plans for a public celebration of this milestone as it focuses on program growth and development.
