Shawnee Community College students train together in mass-casualty simulation

ULLIN, Ill., (KBSI) — Students from four Shawnee Community College programs took part in a large-scale emergency response drill Friday, working together in a simulated mass-casualty incident designed to strengthen real-world readiness.
The scenario involved a mock bus crash with a dozen child “patients.” Cosmetology students created realistic injuries using moulage techniques, adding authenticity to the exercise. Criminal justice students collaborated with the Illinois State Police on scene security and coordination.
Emergency Medical Technician students worked alongside ambulance crews from Johnson and Union counties to triage, stabilize and transport the simulated patients. Once transported to All Saints Hospital—SCC’s nursing lab—associate degree nursing students assumed care, assessing injuries, forming treatment plans and practicing high-pressure clinical decision-making.
The Metropolis Fire Department also participated, providing additional emergency-response support.
“We are incredibly proud of how our students worked together under pressure,” said Dr. Amanda Hannan, dean of Allied Health and Nursing. “Exercises like this prepare our students to serve their communities with skill, confidence and compassion.”
The college thanked its community partners and the children who volunteered as mock patients.
