Shawnee Mass Transit awarded $100,000 grant to expand rural transportation services

VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — Shawnee Mass Transit District has been awarded a $100,000 Community Rides Grant to expand rural transportation services in Southern Illinois.
The funding comes from the Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility Technical Assistance Center in partnership with the National Rural Technical Assistance Program. Shawnee Mass Transit was one of five agencies selected nationwide to receive funding and technical assistance.
District officials say the grant will support the launch of “Shawnee Express,” an expansion that includes a same-day, on-demand ride option and extended service hours in Anna and Metropolis. Weekday hours will be extended until 6 p.m., and Saturday service will operate from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Officials say the changes are intended to help residents reach medical appointments, second-shift jobs, shopping and other essential services outside current operating hours. Future expansion into other areas of the district’s service region is planned.
Executive Director Michael Pietrowski said expanded service hours were the top request from riders and community partners. He said the new service aims to reduce wait times and improve access to work, health care and other daily needs.
Shawnee Mass Transit District provides public transportation services in Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union counties.
