Shelter-in-place lifted after train derailment near Hickman-Carlisle county line

HICKMAN COUNTY, Ky., (KBSI) — Officials have lifted a shelter-in-place advisory following a train derailment near the Hickman County-Carlisle County line late Sunday night.
According to Hickman County Emergency Management, crews were notified at approximately 10:16 p.m. May 31 of a possible derailment involving a CN Railroad train near Peery Road.
Initial assessments found that about 30 railcars and two locomotives had derailed. The train was carrying a mixed freight load that included aggregate materials, automotive-related cargo and various nonhazardous chemical products.
Emergency officials initially identified two railcars as potential hazardous materials concerns. However, after further evaluation by hazardous materials specialists and railroad officials, authorities determined the railcars do not pose a threat to public safety.
As a result, the shelter-in-place advisory for residents near the rail corridor in northern Hickman County has been lifted.
No injuries have been reported.
Emergency crews remain on scene and are continuing recovery and cleanup operations with CN Railroad representatives. Officials said the derailment occurred in a heavily wooded area beyond the end of Peery Road, creating access challenges for responders and recovery crews.
Peery Road remains closed until further notice, and residents are urged to avoid the area.
Response efforts are also affecting traffic on U.S. Highway 51 between Kentucky 288 and Kentucky 80 in Arlington. Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes.
Multiple local, regional and state agencies are assisting with the response, including emergency management, fire, law enforcement and transportation officials from Hickman, Carlisle and McCracken counties, as well as Kentucky Emergency Management and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
