Sheriff’s Department encourages use of anonymous tip line

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to speak up, and make a difference through their anonymous tip line.

Derick Wheetley is the Scott County Sheriff, and he shares that in an effort to enhance community safety and encourage public involvement they are urging citizens to utilize their anonymous tip line.

It plays crucial roles in us solving crimes and in preventing the crimes”, says Wheetley. “Theres some circumstances here recently where the tip line has helped break open some leads in some major cases and helped our investigators have an extra tool to work with.”

Wheetley says it’s a community effort to cut down on crime but through the tip line there’s no pressure, no names, just a way a way to help keep your area safe.

I think peoples afraid that they don’t want to be mentioned in a report or have to come to court, or fear of retaliation, the list goes on for several reasons but again you can remain anonymous, and it still gives us a tool to work with to follow some leads” says Wheetley.

Wheetley shares that for emergency situations always call 911, and for regular response calls call the Sheriff’s Department but for tips on crime you may have witnessed or want to stay unknown on then use the anonymous tip line.

Theres two ways to make an anonymous report.

“The first way you can go to Scott County Sheriffs webpage and there’s a link for submit a crime and that’ll give you the option to fill out all the boxes or just the information that’s pertinent for us and be anonymous or you can call our non-emergency number here at the sheriff’s office” says Wheetley.
