POTOSI, Mo., (KBSI) — Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accidental death of a 1-year-old child at a day care facility located outside the Potosi city limits.
Sheriff Dwayne S. Reed said the incident occurred Thursday. Preliminary information indicates the child slipped through a small opening in a playground slide, causing the child’s head to become lodged and restrict the airway, resulting in a loss of oxygen.
Two sheriff’s deputies were the first responders at the scene and immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR. Fire department personnel and the ambulance district arrived shortly afterward and continued advanced medical treatment. Despite those efforts, the child was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the incident.
The investigation is being conducted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Division of Family Services. The investigation remains ongoing.
The sheriff’s office extended condolences to the child’s family, caregivers and others affected by the loss. Officials said no additional details will be released at this time out of respect for the family and the integrity of the investigation.
