Sheriff’s office investigating after report of high schol baseball player struck with bat sleeve
EDDYVILLE, Ky. (KBSI) – The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 14-year-old baseball player was hit in the mouth with a weighted bat sleeve.
Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Eddyville Police Department responded to a disturbance complaint at Lee S. Jones Park at the high school baseball field on Saturday, April 1 just before 4 p.m.
Lyon County EMS was also reponded for a 14 year old who had reportedly been struck in the mouth.
A visiting team baseball coach became upset following a call by an umpire, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. During his moment of frustration, he picked up a weighted bat sleeve and threw it into his team’s dugout where it struck the a teen player in the face causing injury to the student player, according to the sheriff’s office.
Then, a brief disturbance broke out among fans and coaches with the opposing team.
Lyon County EMS took the teen to Baptist Health in Paducah for treatment of his injuries.
Video evidence and witness statements were collected by law enforcement.
The incident remains under investigation by Lyone County Deputy Aaron O’Leary and Sheriff Brent White.
