Sheriff’s Office: Man facing attemped murder, other charges after dragging sheriff’s deputy by vehicle

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – A Tennessee man faces attempted murder and other charges in Franklin County, Illinois.
Adrian L. Perry, 36, of Bells, Tenn. faces charges of attempted first degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery, vehicular hijacking, attempted vehicular hijacking and criminal damage to government supported property.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, September 30 from a driver who was traveling on Rend City Road north of State Highway 14.
The caller told authorities that a person was standing in the middle of the road and tried to flag her down. As she slowed, she told authorities that the person tried to enter her vehicle. So, she continued on and called 911.
The caller described the man as a black male wearing dark clothing.
A deputy responded to the area and found Perry standing in the road. The deputy begin speaking with Perry and shortly after he became agitated and a physical confrontation happened, according to the sheriff’s office.
Perry entered the driver compartment of the deputy’s patrol car, according to the sheriff’s office.
The struggle continued until the Perry began to speed away, dragging the deputy alongside the patrol car. As the deputy was being dragged, Perry “aggressively swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic” where the deputy was thrown from the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect continued to drive away and crash the squad car near the intersection of Rend City Road and Rend Lake Dam Road.
Shortly after, sheriff’s deputies say Perry confronted a citizen who had just parked a car at a recreation lot and battered the person before trying to enter the vehicle.
He was unsuccessful at stealing the vehicle so he ran on foot to the Rend Lake Visitor Center and Maintenance Compound, according to the sheriff’s office.
Responding deputies and several municipal officer from throughout Franklin County responded to help with the search.
A deputy found Perry around 7:20 a.m. after he concealed himself within a restricted fenced in area near the Rend Lake Visitor Center. He was arrested.
The injured deputy was taken by ambulance for treament and is recovering.
Perry is being held in the Franklin County Jail.
