Sheriff’s Office: Man found with drugs hidden in body

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. (KBSI) – A man faces drug charges after sheriff’s deputies say they found nearly 600 pills of Xanax hidden inside his body after a traffic stop.

Warren J. Mangum faces charges of controlled substance trafficking (a violation 720 ILCS 570/401.1) and possession of controlled substance (a violation of 720 ILCS 570/402).

Williamson County Sheriff’s Office sheriff’s deputies saw a vehicle commit multiple traffic violations on December 13 at 3:37 a.m. Deputies conducted a traffic stop near Interstate 57 and Herrin Road in rural Johnston City.

While speaking with the people in the vehicle, deputies identified inconsistencies in their explanation of travel details. Both people appeared nervous and deputies could smell the odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

The passenger, identified as Warren J. Mangum, had an outstanding arrest warrant. Mangum was arrested by the deputies.

While walking to the patrol car, deputies noticed Mangum traveling slowly and proceeding with hesitation.

When asked, Mangum said he did not have anything illegal on him.

Deputies had Mangum remove his shoes and inspected them for contraband. Mangum was searched and no contraband was found.

Mangum was taken to the Williamson County Jail.

During the booking process jail staff using a body scanner identified an anomaly on Mangum’s body.

A more thorough search of Mangum resulted in the discovery of a large plastic bag containing white oblong pills both inside and protruding outside of a body cavity.

The concealed contraband was identified as 599 pills of Alprazolam “Xanax”. Alprazolam is classified as a Schedule 4 controlled substance.
