Shopping local, how it can save you from online scams

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Shopping for your Christmas list this year may be better and safer by paying attention to the Better Business Bureau’s safety tips and shopping local.

Sydney Waters with the Better Business Bureau in Cape Girardeau says shoppers are starting earlier than ever, especially younger demographics.

“So scammers are also aware of that, so get ready for scammers to play into your emotions, last minute shopping, things like that,” said Waters.

She says to look for BBB’s accredited business seal when shopping online to find out whether you’re purchasing from a vetted retailer, and to pay attention for red flags.

“If they have been vetted by the BBB we know about their program, we know they’re ethical, we know where your money’s going, and there’s a real product going to you as well,” said Waters.

Another way to stay safe from online scams, is to get out and about by shopping locally.

Dustin Duncan is the owner and founder at D. Duncan Floristry and Boutique. He says shopping local keeps your money within the community.

“Shopping local I like to think of it as you’re putting money back into the community,” said Duncan.

When you shop locally, those local businesses reinvest those profits at the local level, including events or sponsoring local teams in the community. All in all, it helps the local merchants thrive a bit more.

“We have a great downtown,” added Duncan. “Everyone works extremely hard, and it means so much more to shop small then it does big box.”
