Shopping small gives large economic boost locally

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – As the holiday season picks up and shoppers headed out for black Friday deals today, community leaders and business owners say one choice can make a big difference-shopping local.
Right now, local shops are gearing up for the busiest shopping season of the year.
Savanna Edwards is the Marketing and Event Coordinator for Old Town Cape. She shares how when you shop locally, it goes much farther than just the cash register.
“All of your money is basically coming back into the community, which is always really important. You know, if you’re supporting local downtown businesses, the money is most likely going to stay local and come back to those nonprofits or, you know, to the events that are happening downtown, you know, for our community to love and enjoy” says Edwards.
For many small business owners, the push to shop local is about more than just sales, it’s about survival. For small businesses, the holiday can be a make-or-break time for local business owners. For many, their business is how they support their families.
Edwards shares how Old Town Cape is hosting several fun events encouraging shopping local, including small business Saturday Bingo.
“November 29th, we have our third annual small business Saturday bingo event and so with the small business bingo, you can create a bingo card we have 25 businesses participating. So as long as you visit five of those businesses and make a bingo on your card, you can enter to win two $500 shopping sprees and with that shopping spree, you get to, you know, get as many downtown gift cards to share the love to our downtown businesses” says Edwards.
The 33rd Annual Parade of Lights 2025 will take place this Sunday in downtown Cape starting at 5pm.
The parade draws in a huge crowd that families from all over have come to cape for, for over three decades now.
