SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — Juveniles were taken into custody early Thursday following a ShotSpotter gunshot detection alert in Sikeston, according to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Officers responded to the alert in the 100 block of Moore Avenue during the early morning hours of Jan. 29, 2026. While responding, officers saw three juveniles fleeing the area on foot.

Two juveniles were detained a short distance away, and officers recovered two firearms — a 9mm Taurus and a 9mm SCCY. One juvenile was taken into custody on allegations including unlawful use of a firearm, armed criminal action and resisting arrest, and was transported to a juvenile detention facility.

A second juvenile was cited for a curfew violation and released to a guardian. A third juvenile has not been located, and efforts to identify and find that individual are ongoing.

The Scott County Juvenile Office was notified and assisted with the investigation. Police said additional investigative steps are underway, including a review of nearby surveillance footage.

No injuries or property damage were reported. The reason the firearm was discharged, triggering the ShotSpotter alert, remains under investigation.
