Show Me Center helps keep families safe on graduation day at Southeast Missouri State University

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) -Cheers and applause rang through the Show Me Center as thousands gathered Saturday to celebrate Southeast Missouri State University’s commencement ceremony. The graduation marked a milestone for graduates, families, and the university, including handing out an honorary doctorate to comedian Cedric the Entertainer, a SEMO alumni.
“It’s just really crazy to think we made it through all those years and here we are,” said SEMO graduate, who recently completed her student teaching. “Yesterday was my last day seeing all the kids and having them say, ‘We’re going to miss you, you’re gonna go far.’”
Safety was a top priority for university officials, with updated protocols in place to protect everyone. Wil Gorman, general manager of the Show Me Center, said a clear bag policy put into place last fall remains in effect.
“It’s got to be a clear bag,” Gorman said. “We do allow a small clutch that’s 4½ by 6½ inches. Anything larger than that must be clear.”
The university also utilized advanced weapon detection systems to assist with entry while maintaining security. These systems allow guests to keep items like phones and keys in their pockets, helping reduce lines at entrances.
Graduate Cadrian Hutsell talks about her appreciation for the security measures. “I feel pretty safe here,” she said. “There are a lot of staff members around, and I really appreciate that.”
Hutsell, like many others, thinks on the impact of the day. “As I walk across the stage, I’ll just feel really proud of myself and my peers, all the memories and everything we’ve gone through.”
The ceremony was particularly memorable as Cedric the Entertainer became the university’s 10th honorary doctorate recipient. During his speech, he shared personal reflections of his time at SEMO, and advice, inspiring laughter and admiration throughout the arena.
Saturday’s event also marked the final commencement address by Dr. Carlos Vargas, who delivered a heartfelt poem as he concluded his tenure as university president. Quoting the poem Come to the Edge, Vargas encouraged graduates to embrace their futures with courage and ambition.
With over an estimated 8,000 attendees, the day stood as a celebration of achievement, community, and a future full of promise for the graduates. All under the watchful efforts of those working behind the scenes to keep it safe.
