CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI)— Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) has expanded its specialty care teams with the addition of two physicians: hematologist/oncologist Ibrahim Omore, MD, who joins the SIH Cancer Institute, and endocrinologist Klaorat Prasongdee, MD, who joins SIH Endocrinology.
Dr. Ibrahim Omore Joins SIH Cancer Institute
Dr. Omore, originally from Nigeria, completed medical school at the University of Ilorin before moving to the United States. He trained in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital Center, affiliated with Columbia University, and later completed a hematology/oncology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
After years of practicing in New York, Omore said he was drawn to SIH for its ability to provide comprehensive cancer care close to home.
“Over the years, I watched patients travel for hours to major academic centers for cancer treatment,” he said. “Community oncology centers like the SIH Cancer Institute play a vital role in delivering accessible, personalized and compassionate care.”
He noted the institute’s coordinated services—including medical, surgical and radiation oncology, patient navigation, financial counseling and weekly multidisciplinary tumor boards—as a major advantage for patients.
Omore said his personal experience losing a loved one to cancer continues to guide his approach to care.
“This work is more than a career; it’s a calling,” he said. “My philosophy is to treat the whole person with compassion, transparency and partnership.”
Dr. Klaorat Prasongdee Joins SIH Endocrinology
SIH also welcomed endocrinologist Klaorat Prasongdee, MD, who brings specialized training in diabetes, thyroid disease, menopause management and other endocrine conditions.
Originally from Thailand, Prasongdee completed her internal medicine residency at MetroWest Medical Center in Massachusetts and an endocrinology fellowship at Boston Medical Center, a national leader in diabetes and endocrine research.
Her interest in endocrinology grew alongside rapid advancements in diabetes therapies.
“Today’s diabetes medications not only help control blood sugar,” she said, “but they can also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and even promote weight loss.”
Prasongdee also provides care for thyroid disorders, osteoporosis and hormone-related health concerns. She says her patient-care approach centers on communication and collaboration.
“I always want patients to feel heard and confident that their endocrinology concerns are being addressed,” she said. “As a specialist, I work closely with each patient’s primary care provider to ensure they receive the best, most coordinated care possible.”
Both physicians are now accepting patients within the SIH network.
