Sikeston Department of Public Safety honoring Police Week

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – This week the Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers will be wearing mourning bands for National Police Week.
May 15, 2023 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed that May 15 would serve as this day and during the week in which May 15 fell would serve as National Police Week.
National Police Week pays special recognition to those peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.
Tyler Rowe, a Sergeant for the Sikeston Department of Public Safety says, “Well, it’s for us, a time to remember any officer who has given, taken the ultimate sacrifice that has died on the line of duty that we’ve worked with as brothers and sisters throughout the nation. Every officer you’ll see them with a badge, and we’ll put a mourning band around it, what that signifies is, is that there was a loss.”
