Sikeston says printing error left motor vehicle tax off some New Madrid County bills

SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — City officials in Sikeston said a printing error caused the motor vehicle tax to be omitted from recent New Madrid County tax bills during a transition in tax collection services.

The city said the issue was discovered during the transition to contracting with Scott and New Madrid counties for the collection of city taxes. As a result, the motor vehicle tax did not print correctly on New Madrid County tax statements.

Officials said New Madrid County residents will receive a second notice by mail for the omitted tax and will have 60 days to pay without penalty. The city emphasized the motor vehicle tax is not new, noting it was approved in 1976 and began appearing on tax bills in 1999.

City officials said the tax will be properly included on 2026 tax statements and thanked residents for their understanding during the transition period.
