SIU mourns professor killed in Jackson County shooting

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Southern Illinois University Carbondale is mourning the death of professor Kofi Akamani following a shooting Saturday in Jackson County.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the tragic passing of one of our faculty members, Dr. Kofi Akamani,” the university said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and students during this difficult time.”
Akamani’s wife, Betty Akamani, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death.
SIU is offering counseling services to students affected by Akamani’s death. Counseling and Psychological Services will be available in Room 107 of the Agriculture Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in addition to services at its regular locations.
The university said a memorial celebrating Akamani’s life will be held at a later date.
The charge against Betty Akamani is an accusation. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
