SIU researchers explore algae as cleaner way to extract rare earth elements

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Researchers at Southern Illinois University have found that microalgae can more than double the concentration of rare earth elements obtained from rock samples.
The research grew from work conducted during the 2023-2025 AlgaePrize competition. The team includes professors Scott Hamilton-Brehm and Daniel Hummer, former finalists Mercedez Hanlon and Alex Bechtel and graduate student Kristina Kohl.
Researchers created a miniature riverbed using a cattle trough filled with 50 gallons of water. A pump simulated a river current, while suspended LED lights acted as artificial sunlight.
Pulverized rock containing rare earth elements was added to the water before researchers introduced microalgae.
The results suggest algae could provide a cleaner alternative to traditional extraction methods. Researchers said the process could also produce useful materials for biofertilizers and biodiesel.
