Slick road conditions lead to many school closures
MARBLE HILL, Mo. (KBSI) – Many area school districts were closed Monday, January 22 due to poor road conditions and possibility of black ice.
“Our officers responded to a few motors vehicle crashes this morning as the weather was moving through this morning it was below freezing still so a lot of that rain was freezing as it hit the roadways,” said Cape Girardeau Police Public Information Officer Bobby Newton.
Jackson and Marble Hill also saw several incidents early in the morning hours from slick road conditions.
Peyton Kight is a teenager who attends Jackson High School. He talks about his experience on the roads this morning.
“There was a little bit of ice on the road, there was a wreck that I saw too,” said Kight.
Kight has a tip for other younger drivers.
“Just go slow,” he said. “I know we all have like our hormones, and we just want to go fast but definitely just go slow because it’s not worth getting into a wreck.”
Newton says roads are pretty clear now but citizens should use caution.
“The temperatures are above freezing we were not seeing the ice we were seeing this morning and hopefully it just continues to rain so its just wet roadways right now so make sure your slowing down and giving yourself some extra space and overnight if those temperatures do fall again those wet roadways could refreeze,” said Newton.
