Snow Fall Creates Dangerous Road Conditions In Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — As snow continues to fall across Cape Girardeau into the overnight hours, road conditions are not ideal, making travel dangerous for residents.

Drivers in the area expressed their concerns today about the slick roads as they struggled to navigate the winter storm.

“Yeah, it’s snowing out here. I can hardly stand—nonetheless, drive,” said Levi McWilson, a local driver battling the conditions.

Many residents are choosing to stay off the roads, looking instead to hunker down at home.

“I got the fire nice and warm, board games out. We’re ready,”  McWilson said, preparing for a long night indoors.

Some businesses in the area have also taken precautions, closing early to ensure the safety of their employees. Robin Cole, the president of the Rite Group, said the decision to send workers home early was made with safety in mind.

“Knowing what this weather will look like this at 5:00, we made the decision to send employees home at 3:00 so they would have time to get home before this massive snowstorm makes the roads even more hazardous,” Cole said.

As for whether businesses and workers will be back on the road tomorrow, the answer remains up in the air.

“Honestly, work will probably want me to come in, but we’ll see how it goes,” McWilson said.

Cole added that the Rite Group will look at conditions in the morning before deciding whether to open.

“Every morning when there’s weather like this, we assess the situation at 6:00 a.m. and then communicate to our employees whether we’ll open on time, delay opening, or possibly remain closed for the day,” Cole explained.

With snowfall expected to continue, the Cape Girardeau Police Department is asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to drive cautiously if they must be on the road.
