Southeast Missouri Food Bank aid to tornado victims

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – After a series of tornadoes struck Southeast Missouri on March 14, local communities are reeling from the devastation. Many residents are left with little more than the clothes on their backs, while volunteers work tirelessly to provide relief.
Angela Clyburn, emergency resource manager for Mill Springs, described the emotional toll of the situation. “It’s emotional. It was emotional to go through it, it was also emotional earlier when we were delivering products and food,” Clyburn said. “To be greeted with hugs, thank you, and appreciation—it’s overwhelming.”
The response to the disaster has included the distribution of vital supplies, such as canned goods, popcorn, and juice. Clyburn, alongside others, is helping to ensure that families in need, especially in Wayne County, receive these essential items.
“The response has been very touching and humbling. Everyone is so appreciative, even for something as simple as a toothbrush,” Clyburn added.
The Southeast Missouri Food Bank (SEMO Food Bank), in collaboration with its partners, is conducting mobile food distributions in the hardest-hit areas. Heather Collier, SEMO Food Bank communications manager, emphasized the importance of the food aid for the communities affected by the tornadoes.
“For families who have suffered damage from the tornadoes or severe storms, the need is critical,” Collier said. “Many of the counties hardest hit already have some of the highest food insecurity rates in the state. These families were already struggling to make ends meet, and now with the added costs of rebuilding, it’s even harder. We’re grateful to be able to help.”
Food distributions are underway in four counties: Wayne, Carter, Butler, and Reynolds. For those like Clyburn, who are working to provide relief, it’s a reminder of the hardships others face.
“It makes you realize what you have is important,” Clyburn said. “Some of these people may not have had much, but now they have nothing. It’s heartbreaking.”
The SEMO Food Bank is continuing to work with emergency management and other partners to schedule additional mobile food distributions in the coming weeks.
