Southeast Missouri Pets at critical capacity, asks community for patience

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri Pets says its shelter is operating at critical capacity and is asking the community for patience as it manages a growing waitlist for animal intake.

According to the organization, every kennel at the shelter is currently full, and it is continuing to operate with managed intake to avoid euthanizing animals because of a lack of space or extended shelter stays.

While owners wait for space to become available, Southeast Missouri Pets said it can often provide resources such as pet food and guidance on safely rehoming pets to help keep animals in their homes.

The organization said it remains committed to its no-kill mission, which it says requires carefully managing available space while giving every animal an opportunity to find a permanent home.

Southeast Missouri Pets thanked the community for its patience and continued support as staff work through the waiting list and care for the animals currently at the shelter.
