Southeast Missouri Pets celebrates holidays with adoption pajama party

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- With a full kennel Southeast Missouri Pets is getting ready for a holiday pajama party in hopes that it will bring in potential adoptions.

The holidays can bring stress and SEMO Pets believe the human to pet interaction can help improve the lives of both.

Development Director Brent Foster says this event helps bring that joy we look for during the holidays.

“Yeah, just like you and I animals need social interaction,” said Foster. “They need exercise they need fun and something to look forward to just like human beings.”

Executive Director Jenn Farmer hopes the pajama party will help increase adoption rates.

“The kennels? We’re over capacity,” said Farmer.

Right now, the shelter is home to more than 140 dogs and 60 to 70 cats. But even though this event is exciting, Foster wants to remind everyone the holidays are temporary, and adoption is a commitment.

“Well, it is a lifetime commitment so depending on the whether it’s a dog or a cat it could be a part of your family for 15 or 20 years,” said Foster.

He says that there are many other ways to give the gift of love for pets by donating to shelters in your area, or just stopping by to interact with the animals.

“It gets the community involved,” he said. “It gets everyone excited and gives everyone the chance to come spend time with our animals and with our wonderful team that supports these animals.”

The shelter will be open from 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20 for the festivities to begin.

Just like the caregivers for those sheltered animals, if you show up to the party in your Christmas jammies, you will receive $50 off an adopted pet.
