Southeast Missouri Pets launches ‘Turkey Tasters’ program for shelter dogs

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The humane society of Southeast Missouri is running an event to help give sweet shelter dogs a little break from the shelter life.
At Southeast Missouri pets the staff say that the holidays can be one of the hardest times of the year for shelter pets, but they’re hoping that a new event called ‘Turkey Tasters’ helps change that.
Turkey Tasters for thanksgiving ends today November 26, 2025, but Executive Director of Semo Pets Jenn Farmer says they will be doing this again for the Christmas holiday and have a program all year around called Adventure Tails that allows families not quite ready to adopt a dog to temporarily foster one.
“We’re doing, turkey tasters. That was, all day today. People come pick up dogs and have them for the holidays and return them on Sunday” says Farmer. “These dogs need the time out. They love to get it and home history notes help that way. We can tell what they’re good at and not good at here at the shelter.”
Turkey Tasters is completely free and gives the dogs a chance to get out of their crate and enjoy some one-on-one time to get some free pets and treats!
Farmer says they are beginning to run low on some much-needed items at the shelter and could also use some help!
“We just love having our pets go into homes. We treat them wonderfully while they’re here, too” says Farmer. “We’re always up for donations as well as volunteers. Right now, we’re in need of dog food. So, if you have any dog food you would like to send us, we’ll take it. I appreciate that. But, yeah, having these, animals getting into good homes is what we’re here for. That’s our best. Our best type of day is to have that happen.”
Dog and Cat food donations can be dropped off at Southeast Missouri Pets, or they have an Amazon wish list link where donations can be purchased.
