CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri Pets announced it will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026, celebrating five decades of service to animals and the community.
Founded in 1976, Southeast Missouri Pets began as a volunteer-led organization serving Cape Girardeau and has grown into a regional, no-kill animal welfare organization serving communities across southeast Missouri and parts of southern Illinois. The organization provides shelter, medical care, advocacy and education aimed at strengthening the human-animal bond.
In 2025, Southeast Missouri Pets cared for 2,612 animals, providing shelter, food, medical treatment, rehabilitation and behavioral support. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated prior to adoption. The organization operates with in-house veterinary care, mobile surgical services and a dedicated behavior team.
To mark the anniversary, Southeast Missouri Pets plans yearlong activities highlighting its impact and future goals, including a commemorative 50th anniversary membership package, special community events and a milestone anniversary celebration bringing together supporters, adopters, volunteers and partners.
“As we celebrate 50 years, we are reflecting on how far we’ve come and focusing on how we can continue to grow, improve and serve,” said Jenn Farmer, executive director of Southeast Missouri Pets. “This anniversary is not just about our history; it’s about the animals and families we will serve for the next 50 years.”
The organization is community funded, with nearly 70% of operations supported through private donations, memberships and fundraising events. Additional details on anniversary events and membership opportunities will be announced throughout the year.
