CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State University has been recognized among the best regional universities in the Midwest, according to the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report.

The rankings evaluate more than 1,450 colleges and universities on academic quality.

Southeast is ranked as the 26th best public school and 89th best regional university in the Midwest. Southeast has been consistently ranked by U.S. News since 1993.

“I am pleased to see Southeast included in the rankings once again,” said Dr. Carlos Vargas, president of Southeast Missouri State University. “It is because of our dedicated faculty and staff who work to ensure our students have outstanding academic programs to prepare them for tomorrow’s careers and have necessary support, so they succeed in their academic and career pursuits.”

Southeast was listed among the top performers on social mobility for regional Midwestern universities. This ranking recognizes universities that are successful at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students who have been awarded Pell Grants.

Nearly 30% of Southeast’s students receive federal Pell Grants and 45% of the university’s students are the first in their families to go to college.

“This truly speaks to the transformational power of higher education and our mission to contribute to the development of our region and beyond,” said Vargas.

U.S. News publishes the Best Colleges rankings each year to provide prospective students and their families with helpful data and information on factors such as graduation rates, social mobility, and graduate indebtedness.
