Southeast Missouri State University contributes $1.4 billion to state economy

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A new economic impact study shows Southeast Missouri State University contributed $1.4 billion to the state’s economy in the 2023-2024 fiscal year, supporting 14,725 jobs.

The study, conducted by Lightcast, highlights the university’s role in driving economic growth, workforce development and social opportunity.

According to the study, the university’s economic impact includes:

— $90.2 million from operations spending
— $8.7 million from out-of-state visitor spending
— $36.1 million from student spending
— $1.3 billion from alumni earnings and business productivity

The study also found that students see an average return of $6.50 in higher lifetime earnings for every $1 invested in their SEMO education. Taxpayers receive $2.50 in value for every $1 invested.

SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas said the study confirms the university’s role as a driver of economic vitality.
