CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University announced Monday that it will remain in the Ohio Valley Conference after weeks of speculation about a possible move to another league.
University officials said they evaluated the current conference landscape and determined the OVC “continues to be the best place for us at this time.”
Remaining in the OVC, the university said, allows SEMO to compete in a league that aligns with its values and regional connections. Despite the announced departures of Tennessee Tech and Little Rock, the conference currently has nine full members and eight football-playing institutions.
“A reinforced commitment from the remaining members creates much-needed stability and provides an opportunity to recruit new institutions into the league,” the statement said.
SEMO cited its recent success in the conference as additional support for staying. Since 2019, the university’s athletics programs have won 37 OVC championships and three OVC Commissioner’s Cup trophies. All teams maintain a GPA above 3.0, and the department reports a 90% Graduation Success Rate.
Looking ahead, the university said it will continue working to strengthen its position within the OVC while evaluating future opportunities.
“We appreciate the continued support of our fans, alumni and community as we pursue excellence on and off the field,” the statement said.
