Southern 7 Health Department warns against unlicensed sewage contractors

KBSI FOX23 News at 9 p.m.

ULLIN, Ill., (KBSI) – Southern 7 Health Department is warning residents to use caution when hiring contractors for private sewage disposal system work after receiving reports of unlicensed individuals posing as qualified professionals.

The department said unlicensed contractors have offered to install, repair, or replace sewage systems but often fail to complete the work or install systems that do not meet state or local code requirements. These violations can lead to system failures, sewage backups, groundwater contamination, public health risks, and costly legal or corrective actions for homeowners.

Officials advise residents to verify that contractors are licensed, bonded, and insured before signing agreements. Verification can be obtained through the health department or the appropriate licensing authority.

Homeowners are also urged to request written contracts that outline the scope of work, payment schedule, and permit requirements. Red flags include contractors demanding full payment in advance, pressuring immediate decisions, or refusing to provide documentation of licensure.

Repairs, replacements, and installation of new private sewage disposal systems must be permitted through local health departments.
