Southern Seven Health Department shares winter driving safety tips

FOX23 News at 9 p.m

MOUND CITY, Ill., (KBSI) — With winter weather increasing the likelihood of snow- and ice-covered roads, the Southern Seven Health Department is urging drivers to take precautions to stay safe during seasonal travel.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, snow and ice contribute to more than 1,300 deaths and 116,800 injuries each year in the United States. In 2023 alone, snow and sleet conditions were factors in 320 fatal crashes and 22,293 injury crashes.

Southern Seven Health Department encourages motorists to follow these winter driving recommendations:

  • Drive low and slowly: Use lower gears and reduce your speed on snowy or icy roads.
  • Increase following distance: Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead to allow more time to stop.
  • Use caution around snowplows: Plows travel slowly, make wide turns, and frequently stop or change lanes. Avoid crowding or passing them unless necessary and safe.
  • If stranded, stay with your vehicle: Monitor your surroundings, conserve energy, and avoid overexertion.
  • Make your vehicle visible: Use bright markers on antennas or windows and keep the interior dome light on.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: Ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow. Run the engine only occasionally for heat, and never inside an enclosed space or with windows fully up for long periods.
  • Prepare before traveling: Have a winter safety check performed by a mechanic, including fluid levels, tires, wiper blades, and heater function. Address any maintenance issues beforehand.
