Sponsors needed for Kentucky Summer Food Service Program

KENTUCKY (KBSI) – More than half of students attending public school depend on free or reduced-price meals in Kentucky.

The need for meal assistance doesn’t stop during the summer months when in school is out.

When school is out for the summer the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

provide the Summer Food Service Program to ensure families are still receiving meal assistance even when school is out.

The Kentucky Department of Education is needing more sponsors to continue to provide meals to Kentucky children in low-income areas.

KDE encourages schools, local businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations to sponsor the Summer Food Service Program.

54% of children attending public schools in Kentucky participate in the free or reduced-price meal program.

Sponsors are needed in order for the program to continue.

Potential sponsors can attend a free training program to learn more about the Summer Food Service Program and what it means to be a sponsor.
