Sports Zone March 2, 2024: SEMO baseball, tennis dominate at home

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southeast Missouri State baseball team entered Saturday’s doubleheader with Toledo on a three-game winning streak.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Redhawks plated 12 runs in the first four innings, half of which came in the bottom of the 4th, and four of those on one swing, a grand slam by Nolan Ackerman, who was just 1-for-8 all season before that at-bat.

Redhawks starting pitcher Haden Dow tossed 6 innings of shutout ball with 9 strikeouts 2 walks and just 3 hits allowed. Eddie White set down the Rockets 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th, and SEMO notched its fourth straight win. They would make that five wins in a row later in the day, as they blasted the Rockets 13-3 in game two of the doubleheader, 13-3.

SEMO tennis played its spring season home opener against Bradley at the John C. Bierk Redhawks Tennis Complex on Saturday.

No. 1 doubles tandem Daniela Hlacikova and Juliette Talieu defeated Andra Sirbu and Kristin Hailey, 6-2, for their fifth straight win at No. 1. Trinity Calinescu and Vivian Lai won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for SEMO.

And it would only take three singles matches for SEMO to finish off the Braves. Hlacikova took care of  Maria Bezmenova, 7-6, 6-2, and Calinescu and Lera Valeeva win their singles matches, deeming the other three unnecessary to finish and wrapping up a 4-0 SEMO victory.

The Redhawks will be back in action tomorrow as they host Arkansas State.
