Sports Zone Nov. 11, 2023: Multiple high school football teams advance to state quarterfinals, SEMO women’s basketball wins home opener, Cape Central’s Theall wins state title

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Central High School football team hosted a district championship game for the second straight season as they took on Farmington Friday night.
Cape Central jumped out to a 17-7 halftime lead, and after a bit of a sluggish start to the second half, the Tigers found themselves inside their own 1-yard line. Sophomore running back KeyShawn Boyd took the direct snap, broke through the line, and raced 99 yards down the sideline for the longest touchdown in school history.
Early in the 4th quarter, Zai’Aire Thomas caught a 4th-down pass from Jathan Spain, juked out several defenders and dragged a Farmington player into the end zone, an exclamation point on a 37-13 Tigers win.
Cape Central will travel the the St. Louis area next Saturday for a quarterfinal clash with Eureka. Kickoff will be at 1 pm at Eureka High School.
In other high school football playoff action, Paducah Tilghman and Jackson each advanced to the quarterfinals in their state playoff brackets. These two teams have won a combined 22 games in a row.
The Blue Tornado will face Bardstown in the quarterfinals, while Jackson will host Christian Brothers College out of St. Louis.
In college basketball, the Southeast Missouri State women’s team defeated Stephens College, 82-60, in their home opener at the Show-Me Center Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks’ next home game will be Nov. 28 against Harris-Stowe.
Cape Central High School swimmer Phin Theall finished first in the state in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.9 seconds.
