Sports Zone: SIU scores late to win War for the Wheel, SEMO volleyball, track and field, high school sports recap
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – What may have been the most anticipated game in the history of the rivalry between Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois University lived up to the billing.
After getting shutout in the first half, SIU scored 26 points in the second half, the final six coming on a Nic Baker touchdown pass to Izaiah Hartrup.
In college volleyball, Southeast Missouri State went 3-0 at the KC Roos Classic this weekend. The Redhawks defeated Austin Peay 3-1 on Saturday after wins over Kansas City and Saint Louis on Friday. The Redhawks move to 8-3 overall and return home to open conference play on Friday against Morehead State.
In cross country, seven SEMO women runners finished with personal bests at the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. Hannah Eastman was the first Redhawk across the line and finished 6th overall.
On the men’s side, two Redhawks set personal bests, including Noah Little, who was the leading Redhawk and finished 41st overall.
History was made in Mt. Vernon as Vienna/Goreville played their first-ever soccer game in school history. The Eagles dropped the contest, 4-3. They return to action on Monday when they travel to Carbondale. They will play an eight-game JV schedule.
The Southern Ilinois University women’s soccer team returns home for the first time in three weeks as they take on Illinois-Chicago on Sunday. The Salukis will face the Flames at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex at 1 pm.
And in high school football, Cape Girardeau Central played its fourth consecutive one-score game to begin the season, besting Park Hills Central, 48-41.
Jackson won its third straight contest, getting the better of Poplar Bluff, 49-21. The Tigers and Indians will renew their rivalry Friday Sept. 22, in Jackson.
In Kentucky, Paducah Tilghman kept on rolling with a 44-14 victory over Hopkinsville. The Tornados (5-0) have scored at least 35 points in every game this season.
