Sports Zone Sept. 9, 2023: SIU football stuns NIU, SEMO rolls against Lindenwood
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southern Illinois University football team pulled off a 14-11 upset of FBS school Northern Illinois on Saturday.
The Salukis won despite getting outgained by 141 yards and possessing the ball for 12 fewer minutes than NIU.
The Salukis sealed the game on their third interception of the contest with 33 seconds left.
The 24th ranked Salukis will take on Southeast Missouri State in the War for the Wheel at Houck Field on Sept. 16.
The SEMO football team crushed Lindenwood, 45-7. Paxton DeLaurent threw for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns. Geno Hess carried the ball 20 times for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The SEMO volleyball team went 2-1 in the McNeese State Tournament this weekend. SEMO will travel to Kansas City for the KC Roos Classic next Friday and Saturday.
In Illinois high school football, the Marion Wildcats improved to 3-0 with a 20-14 win over Mt. Vernon.
In Missouri, Poplar Bluff bested Cape Central, 42-35, in an overtime thriller, and Jackson put up 63 points in a rout of Farmington.
In Kentucky, Paducah Tilghman remained unbeaten with a 42-27 victory over Henderson County. Mayfield rebounded from its first loss of the season to defeat McCracken County, 48-14.
