Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese Bishop Rice pays tribute to Pope Francis

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., (KBSI) — Bishop Edward M. Rice of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau released a statement Saturday on the passing of Pope Francis.

“As we celebrate Easter, our sorrow at the death of Pope Francis is tempered by the promise of eternal life,” Rice said.

Rice praised the pope’s dedication to the church and his commitment to serving the poor and marginalized.

“Pope Francis was a champion of hope, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come,” Rice said.

Rice also noted the pope’s concern for the environment and his call to care for creation, which resonated with the people of southern Missouri.

As the church mourns the loss of its leader, Rice said, “We commend him to almighty God. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.”
