ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KBSI) – The St. Louis Cardinals reached a five-year deal with three-time All-Star catcher Willson Contreras, according to a post on mlb.com.

Contreras is known for brute temperament behind the dish, serving the Cubs as a field general during his tenure in Chicago, but the power he brings to the plate and his ability to gun down runners on the base paths made him a hot commodity.

Contreras was named to his third career All-Star team this past season.

He was signed out of Venezuela in 2009. He converted to catching as a Minor Leaguer and grew into the longest-tenured player in the organization for the Cubs.

Longtime Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina retired at the end of the 2022 season.
