Steele Police warn of bank fraud text scam targeting residents

STEELE, Mo., (KBSI) — The Steele Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing text message scam targeting bank customers.
According to police, victims receive a text message claiming to be from their bank, stating there is a fraud alert on their account and providing a phone number to call.
Authorities said scammers then pose as bank representatives and attempt to obtain personal or banking information. Once that information is provided, the scammers may use it to access the victim’s bank account and steal funds.
Police advise residents not to call phone numbers included in unexpected text messages and never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
Anyone who receives a fraud alert is encouraged to contact their bank directly using the phone number listed on the back of their debit or credit card or through the institution’s official website or mobile app.
Residents who believe they may have shared information with a scammer should contact their bank immediately.
