CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) – The Community Counseling Center (CCC) has brought back its Suicide Prevention Awareness Month displays across five southeast Missouri counties, with installations remaining in place through Oct. 1.

Each display features a sign reading, “Your story doesn’t have to end,” along with the number for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. About 269 colorful pinwheels are included at each site, representing memorial ribbons submitted by families and individuals affected by suicide.

“We have been deeply touched by the overwhelming community response to this project,” said CCC CEO Wendy Ice. “Each pinwheel represents a life lost to suicide, a heartbreaking reminder of this crisis’s impact. Yet, amidst the sadness, we find beauty in the collective effort of our community members, clients, and employees who came together.”

The Missouri suicide rate stands at 18.7 deaths per 100,000 people, higher than the national average of 14.04. CCC leaders said the displays aim to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help.

Community members are encouraged to learn more at Missouri988.org, share information about the 988 Lifeline, and take advantage of suicide prevention trainings. CCC also provides free education programs on suicide prevention and mental health through its Community Education Program.

This year’s displays are located at:

  • MRV Banks in Ste. Genevieve
  • Harps Food Stores in Marble Hill
  • City of Perryville Government site near the water tower at Edgemont Blvd. and Highway 51
  • The Station in Fredericktown
  • Community Counseling Center main office on South Silver Springs in Cape Girardeau
