Suicide Prevention Awareness importance carries throughout the year not just September

POPLAR BLUFF Mo. (KBSI) – The remaining days of September stand for the month of Suicide Prevention Awareness.

Going into the month of October many are not taking this topic lightly. Therapists, authors, and kind people are wanting to help others gather together to speak on the importance of mental health and self-care.

Moriah Joplin is a licensed clinical social worker with a behavioral health organization. She speaks for the mental health conference hosted by the Poplar Bluff veteran affairs.

“In general, one I love talking with providers in general about taking care of themselves so that way we can take care of others so the work we do whether it’s suicide prevention, mental health, support for trauma. The different population of children, adults, and veterans, it’s just so important to have conversations and create that space so that we can have those conversations,” said Joplin.

For half a decade now, Joplin speaks on the topic of self-care around her community.

Joplin loves talking to people of all ages because they’re all going through something different.

“Conversations are so important probably because of the impact on my own life and to implement that not only as a clinician, but for myself from the people I care about in my life. It’s this natural way of having conversations with people together that I really truly enjoy,” said Joplin.

Joplin likes to think about her own challenges in her life to help others. She encourages others to talk through their difficulties and find good coping skills to work through them.

Joplin wants to be a helpful outlet for others.

“We have a month fully dedicated to suicide prevention just because it creates to have a conversation about something. That’s really difficult to talk about. It’s really difficult to reach out for help so I think it highlights the strength of encouragement that really comes from those of us that create a space but also reach out and say I need to talk to someone, or I need help,” said Joplin.

Joplin says not only this month is dedicated to something so important such as suicide prevention, but every month should highlight this topic.
