Summer program teaches those with diabetes how to live healthier

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – Having a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge for many people, especially those with diabetes.

Scott City and the Riverside Regional Library are hosting a special program that helps those living with diabetes live a healthier lifestyle.

“You know all the things that help you to manage your diabetes and we have a tool a toolbox that we use in order to implement the class and it gives you the tools that you need in order to manage,” said Dr. Maude Harris with county engagement in nutrition & health.

Dr. Maude Harris with the Missouri Extension says that the health and safety information people learn through the six-week program can help them as they work with their healthcare providers to find the right balance. It can be especially helpful for those still waiting to see their doctor.

“You know education other than their healthcare provider and they might not be scheduled to see their healthcare provider for another three to six months and so we try and have this class as often as possible so that they can at least you know find out a little additional information,” said Dr. Harris.

Linda Carter, a Scott City resident, has been a participant in the program twice now and says it’s a great way for people to meet and learn from others who also deal with diabetes.

“Best way to get help because not only do you meet people that are knowledgeable, but you also meet people who are in the same situation as they are who need help understanding what’s going on because diabetes affects everybody differently,” said Carter.

If you’re interested in joining the program, there are three remaining sessions left this summer. Classes will be held for the next three Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library.
