Suspected tornado tears through Perryville, Missouri, causing widespread damages

PERRYVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — A suspected tornado tore through Perryville late Friday night, causing widespread damage and power outages but fortunately no reported injuries.

The tornado touched down on the Perry County School District #32 campus at approximately 11:41 p.m., damaging multiple buildings, including a wall collapse on the west side of the high school.

Superintendent Dr. Fara Jones announced that the campus is closed until further notice due to safety concerns and debris.

As of 4 a.m., 1,289 residents were without power, according to Citizen’s Electric’s website. Crews are working to restore power.

Multiple road closures are in effect throughout the county due to debris and downed power lines, including Hwy E and Hwy B from Edgemont to Spring Lake Dr.

Perry County Sheriff Jason Klaus noted that despite the extensive debris field, no injuries have been reported.

Public Works Director Jeff Layton reported 17 road closures in town due to power lines and debris.

Perryville Police Department’s Public Information Officer, Sgt. Jeri Cain, urged citizens to exercise caution when traveling through affected areas and to avoid sightseeing, which can hinder emergency response efforts.

The school district will provide additional information later today.
