Suspect’s phone may have captured Cape Girardeau shooting, court documents reveal
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A shooting suspect’s phone may have captured the incident, according to court documents.
A woman is in critical condition after being shot just before midnight on Sunday, May 11, 2025. According to court documents, the shooting and the moments leading up to it may have been captured on the suspect’s own phone.
Officers responded to a shooting in the 1300-block of Kenwood Drive on Sunday at approximately 11:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the head inside a GMC Yukon. Public information officer Bobby Newton said the victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Officers arrived on scene, located one victim with a gunshot wound to the head,” he said, “they immediately began assessing that individual, providing lifesaving measures to her until medical personnel arrived on scene.”
Cacey Bright, the driver of the vehicle, was taken into custody. Bright stated that she had been loading a magazine into a gun and thought she hit the magazine release but, “must have pulled the trigger.”
The images show Bright loading bullets into a magazine and holding a blue and pink Glock 9mm — first with the slide back, then loaded and ready.
The final photos appear to have been taken from the victim’s perspective in the passenger seat.
The photos show Bright pointing the gun at the camera, her eye closed as though aiming — her finger on the trigger.
The last three images, timestamped 11:43 p.m., appear to have been taken as the phone was falling. The camera captured Bright upside down and in the final photo the phone appeared to be resting on the floor of the vehicle.
Two minutes later, the 911 call was made.
A search warrant was executed on the vehicle and a blue and pink Glock 9mm firearm was seized, along with multiple rounds of ammunition and a spent shell casing.
“Right now, we believe we’ve got all the suspects in custody that’s responsible for that incident,” Newton said. “So there’s no threat to the public’s safety at this moment.”
Bright was taken into custody without incident. On the way to the station, she reportedly said, “Thank you, Jesus,” multiple times.
Bright is facing charges for a Class A felony of domestic assault in the first degree and felony armed criminal action.
She is being held on a $1,000,000 cash-only bond.
The victim remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police said the charges could change depending on the health outcome of the victim.
Police remind the public that charges are accusations, and all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
