CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KBSI) – The investigation continues after a shooting in Cape Girardeau.
Around 5:45 pm on Sept. 11 Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to the 1100 block of North Sprigg for a shot fired call.
When officers arrived, they found that a female had suffered a gunshot wound to her leg.
According to Cape Girardeau Public Information’s Officer Bobby Newton the victim was then located at Rallys located across the street from SEMO DPS.

Southeast Missouri State University sent out an email to students at 6:23 p.m. that there was gun violence reported near the area.
We talked to SEMO student and a community gun violence lead Leslie Washington about her initial thoughts after the shooting. She tells us, “SEMO is supposed to be our safe haven. This is supposed to be our safe haven if we can’t be safe in our own community then why we even here?”
She expressed her concern after yet another shooting in Cape Girardeau, saying “this is the second incident that has happened at the Show Me Center, and now a block away from campus and then literally like three blocks from my apartment on Frederick and then this person is still at large you just never know who’s around you.”
We also asked Bobby Newton what he would tell citizens who may be worries about their safety in the city. Newton says, “Cape Girardeau’s safe we have several officers that are working the road every day day and day out. We do our best to prevent crime from happening, but we can’t be everywhere at once so you know use your own judgment, your observations make sure your paying attention to your surroundings things like that and then also if you see something suspicious. Let us know we can respond out there and we can check it out, we’re not going to prevent all the crime, but we can certainly decrease the crime that we see here in Cape Girardeau.”
Anyone with any information is urged to call the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
