17th Annual Southern Illinois Alternative Gift Fair features nonprofits looking to sell, bring awareness

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – Christmas is on the way and many are looking for gifts for their loved ones, and the 17th Annual Southern Illinois Gift Fair was filled with gifts to give.

Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship member Kathy O’Laughlin says this event help brings awareness.

“A whole range of different organizations who are selling wares and also raising awareness of the services that they provide in the community,” said O’Laughlin.

The fair has seen some changes over the years, from going to virtual

“The event has changed because of COVID there was at least one year where it was totally online this year, I would say we’re almost back to what it normally was,” said O’Laughlin.

Back to normal and back to allowing organizations like the friends with Giants City Group to spread their message, which Vice President Elizabeth Patterson says is important.

“Well because it gives nonprofits and you know representation in the community and everyone here is a nonprofit, so you know everything goes to their causes,” said Patterson.

O’Laughlin says this event is a great way to contribute.

“So, if someone wants to give a gift that really means something contributing to a not-for-profit is a great way to do that,” said O’Laughlin.
