Three Rivers College now offering Surgical Technology program

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KBSI) – Three Rivers College now offers a Surgical Technology program to help meet local employment needs for healthcare providers and to train students to meet those needs.

The need for healthcare workers is on the rise since the covid 19 pandemic. Three Rivers Community College of Poplar Bluff is starting a new surgical tech program in hopes of fulfilling healthcare jobs.

Laura Mcelory is the director of the nursing and surgical tech programs. She gives more details on the program.

“The surgical technology program prepares people to work in the OR. Surgical Technologists are really experts in their field as far as sterility and surgical procedures and they actually help surgeons in surgical procedures and they’re a huge part of the surgical team.”  Says Mcelory.

The application deadline for the new Surgical Technology program at Three Rivers is Dec. 1.

The program is designed to prepare students to become an entry-level Surgical Technologist with the knowledge, skills, and behavior needed to excel.

Both general education and surgical technology courses are included in the program. Clinical laboratory experiences are planned in local healthcare facilities under the direct guidance of the Surgical Technology faculty.

According to Mercer.com by 2025 there will be an estimated shortage of more than 29,00 Nurse Practitioners alone.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the surgical environment, infection control, sterilization techniques, and patient care. They will also learn to anticipate the needs of surgeons, prepare the operating room, and assist in surgical procedures, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.

Upon successful completion of the Surgical Technology program, graduates will have access to career opportunities in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers and clinics.

Surgical technologists are also in high demand in trauma care, obstetrics, and cardiovascular surgery.
