CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — A trial begins today for Lawrence Schanda, accused of murdering 20-year-old Jessi Wilfong, whose remains were found buried in a barn in Cape Girardeau County last June.

Schanda, along with his partner Teresa Baumgartner, was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence in connection with Wilfong’s death.

According to court documents, Wilfong contacted Baumgartner on May 19, requesting a ride from Fredericktown to Cape Girardeau County. Baumgartner and Schanda picked her up and took her to their home in Millersville.

Baumgartner initially told investigators that Wilfong left her home voluntarily between 4-6:30 a.m. on May 20. However, surveillance footage showed Schanda and Wilfong leaving the residence in a truck during the overnight hours, with Wilfong exiting the vehicle upon their return.

A confidential witness later came forward, stating that Baumgartner confided in them about Schanda badly beating Wilfong following an argument. Baumgartner allegedly told the witness that Wilfong’s body was buried on a nearby property.

On June 18, deputies discovered Wilfong’s remains buried in a barn, along with multiple knives, boots, and other items. An autopsy revealed Wilfong had been stabbed multiple times, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Baumgartner’s role in the case and her current status are unclear. Schanda’s trial begins today, with bond set at $5 million cash only.
